The passenger that owned the car I was driving tonight had had a few to drink (and without question would have been over the limit) so I without hesitation took to the wheel to drive the car, and didn’t even think to get my wallet, or indeed put the P-Plates on the car.
Luckily I didn't alow the passenger to drive, as just around the corner I came to a random alcohol and drug testing station, as expected I passed both tests, though as above there were two issues, of course I wasn’t displaying my P plates, and also I didn’t have my license with me.
I am very glad the police officer used common sense in his application of the law tonight and issued me with a caution but also very logically helped me to understand a reason to him why it’s important to carry a license.
The officer does a lot of traffic work and of as a part of his job attends several Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) scenes and reminded me the easiest way to identify a person involved in an accident to inform their family is of course their license.
The officer who I don’t even know the name of gave a fantastic name to ACT policing tonight and I fell it to be my duty to inform everyone.
Though I know it’s illegal not to display your P-Plates and drive without your license the common sense of this officer to understand why I had done and the big picture affect and how I protected the roads by essentially breaking the law to not break another was a fantastic positive thing.
